After a rejuvenating rest (or crash course revision midterms for some) from recess week, the residents of N-house got together for a fun and sumptuous steamboat party cum start-ups sharing session. Startuppers from our N-house community, like Furpal and The Zone, shared their journey and challenges.

The Hype Tribe

Founder: Dilon Ho

The Hype Tribe is an instructional fitness company that specializes in Tricking. Dilon shared that the art of Tricking combines multiple martial art techniques like Taekwondo and Wushu into a cool, acrobatic and rigorous set of moves that can be seen done by the likes of Captain America. A challenge that The Hype Tribe is facing in their journey is to come up with a standardized curriculum and progression of techniques to their learners. Making turnovers are also part and parcel of a start-up where Dilon highlighted the company is facing. He hopes the culture of Tricking catches the heart of Singaporeans and builds the community organically.

KiasuFoodies

Founder: Dylan Teo

Dylan founded KiasuFoodies because he realizes that there are a lot of food sales that go unnoticed in Singapore. Merchants release food coupons and discounts to increase traffic to their stalls during non-peak hours. He designed a Telegram chatbot that releases these deals in a timely and efficient manner. More than 100K subscribers are on the platform since the day of inception. He has shared that his company has plans to expand KiasuFoodies to greater heights in terms of the categorization of deals. For example, a user would be able to narrow down their search for deals to a specific cuisine (e.g.: bubble tea) and locations of the deals (e.g.: NUS).

Furpal

Founder: Kylie Teo

Kylie is an evident pet lover. She started Furpal purely through the love of her pet. She wanted pets to have buddies where they could play with and thus created a platform to connect dog lovers (who never had the privilege to own a dog before) to dogs for playdates. She shared that the most challenging aspect of her start-up is the technical side of things as she has not found a CTO as of yet.

The Zone

Founders: Jovin Liew, Muruges, Chevlene, Wei Hao

The Zone was born in Silicon Valley when Jovin learns about the art of journaling. He learns that different people have different styles and purposes of journaling. Some do it for self-improvement, while others do it simply to jot down how their day went so that they can revisit their past experiences through their writing. Together with his team, they created a guided journaling platform that helps the user go through the organic process of journaling and get valuable insight from the platform through the written words. They curated an algorithm to pick up the different words used in the journal and analyze the emotions of the writer. The app will then feedback with an emotion radar. The Zone is still in the beta stage where much development is still in progress.

Try The Zone on iOS and Android, and share your feedback with the team.

Flujo Signature Pro

Founders: Fatim Mohrini, Aaron Ramzeen

Fatim and Aaron are returnees of NOC Shenzhen. Bringing back a project started there, they are currently working on a Kickstarter campaign for Signature Pro — a 7-in-1 M.2 SSD enclosure and adaptor hub. In Shenzhen where hardware and maker space are at every corner of the street, they had come across many different adaptor hubs and SSD enclosure, but never the two together. With a swiss-army knife idea for computer accessories, Fatim and Aaron designed and created the Signature Pro with MacBook users in mind. They have come a long way from design to prototyping to finally marketing. Their Kickstarter campaign is slated to be launched on October 11th and will run for 30 days.

Finally, after rounds of speakers, LET THE FEAST BEGIN.

The steamboat was divided into 3 categories — Halal, Common and Vegetarian. Everyone had a good fill with fun banters and catching up. The Halal section even had a burned pot at the end of the night because of the lack of stirring and excessive talking. Even though it was in the midst of midterms, everyone did their part at the end of the night and cleaned up together.
