<head> Hello world. This is N-house’s resident blogger checking in for another update of the goings-on at the most n-trepreneurial building in town. </head>
<body> The last Wicked Wednesday, we held ‘Code for Startups 2’, a continuation of last semester’s wickedly popular HTML+CSS+Javascript workshop of the same name. Hosted by Hadi, who was ably assisted by N-house residents from the School of Computing, the workshop saw N-house’s Venture Lab filled to the brim with some 40 NUS members, more of whom were still streaming in after the event had started.
Why, for an event named ‘Code for Startups’, was the focus on HTML+CSS and Javascript, one may ask? Why, that’s because a landing page is simply one of the best ways that one begins to build a startup. With a website, one can validate, advertise, inform, and host a minimum viable product — all essential tools of the trade. In our world of tech-enabled business, a well-built website is gold.
Attendees were thoroughly introduced to the basics of HTML, and made acquainted with the numerous resources available on the web with which one can easily build an effective and functional website. A comprehensive directory of the resources compiled by Hadi ensured that the crowd could enjoy the riches of the web with speed and ease — and so can you, at www.bit.ly/CodeForStartup.
If there was a gripe, it was that the content of the workshop was too ambitious for a 2-hour session — after covering HTML, the workshop barely approached the CSS portion before it was time to close shop. It was a similar experience to last semester’s equivalent, where a hefty crowd and a diversity of learning curves conspired to soften the pace of the workshop.
Yet, a productive time was had by all. After all, all it takes to embark on the path of learning is to take the first step — and for some attendees on the night, that step was taken. Questions were asked, skills were learnt, and some nifty resources were shared by Hadi and his Brotherhood.
The path of a startup, or a web developer for those not as inclined, is a long and windy road. We hope N-house’s Wicked Wednesdays events have helped some along the way, and should a website need be built along the road, we hope Code For Startups 2 was a really useful road sign. :)
Peace out. Stayed tuned for the next updates of N-house’s Wicked Wednesdays events. </body>
